Background of Anarkali and Prince Salim
Anarkali is a famous figure from the folklore of the Mughal Empire in the Indian subcontinent. According to traditional stories, she was an exceptionally beautiful dancer or courtesan in the royal court of the Mughal emperor Akbar during the late 16th century. Her name “Anarkali” means “pomegranate blossom,” a title believed to reflect her beauty and grace. Some historical accounts suggest that her real name might have been Nadira Begum or Sharf-un-Nisa, although historians still debate whether she truly existed or whether the story is partly legend.
Prince Salim was the son of Emperor Akbar and the heir to the Mughal throne. As a young prince, Salim was known for his sensitive nature, strong emotions, and sometimes rebellious attitude toward royal authority. He grew up surrounded by luxury, art, music, and culture inside the Mughal palace, where dancers and performers were often part of court entertainment.
How Their Love Began
According to the popular legend, Prince Salim first saw Anarkali while she was performing a dance in the imperial court. Her beauty, elegance, and confidence immediately caught the prince’s attention. Over time, their encounters became more frequent during palace events and gatherings.
The story says that admiration slowly turned into deep affection. Despite the strict rules of the royal court and the difference in their social status—Salim being a prince and Anarkali a court dancer—they secretly fell in love. Their meetings were often hidden from the eyes of the court because such a relationship was considered unacceptable for a future emperor.
Eventually, their secret romance became known in the palace. When Emperor Akbar discovered the relationship, he strongly opposed it, believing that a prince and future ruler of the Mughal Empire could not marry a court dancer. This conflict between royal duty and personal love is what made the story of Anarkali and Salim one of the most famous tragic romances in South Asian history.
